Ivan Bilibine's children books published before 1905 (that is, before the revolution) were regularly re-issued in USSR but also in France at La Farandole edition (close to the french Communist party).

After his rally to the Mir Iskousstva movement (The World of Art), Ivan Yakolevitch Bilibine illustrates a lot of children books and more specifically in stories from the ancient times and fairytales. His books will always be sent as gift for the tsar's children until 1917.
This will not preclude him from taking part in satirical revues during the 1905 revolution where he will draw revolutionary caricatures.

At the end of the 19th century, next to the Arts & Crafts in Great-Britain and the Art Nouveau in France, another avant-garde appears in Russia with the same ideas : Mir Iskusstva (The World of Art). Artists are more decorators than illustrators as they are more keen on embellishing than illustrating in the conventional sense. Ivan Yakolevitch Bilibin is one of the most important artist of this movement and he is the most engaged in the children books domain.
