Plus qu’aux fades personnages de cette histoire, c’est à nous raconter son été 1961 que Maurice Sendak s’attache dans ce petit livre : ses vacances dans les paysages du Vermont et sa découverte des aquarelles de Winslow Homer via une exposition au Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, un riche catalogue et un article sur le sujet paru cet été-là dans Art Quarterly. Tout au long de l’album il va mettre son dessin à l’épreuve de cette manière, réduisant toujours l’importance du cerne noir, jusqu’à finalement l’abandonner sur la dernière image, laissant le lièvre fondre dans cette couleur qu’est la nuit.

More than this story’s characters, the interest of Maurice Sendak in this small book is in the tale of his 1961 summer :  holidays in the Vermont landscape and the discovery of Winslow Homer’s watercolors exhibited at The Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, and the analysis of the old American master’s technique in Art Quarterly. All along the picture book Sendak puts his drawing skills in danger in favor of the paintbrush work with water and colours, until the last picture where Mr. Rabbit dives into into the night/colour.

Réalisé peu de temps avant que Maurice Sendak ne se lance dans la création de Max et les Maximonstres, cet album énonce déjà les thèmes chers au Maître: l’indépendance de l’enfant et sa perméabilité aux mondes imaginaires.
On évitera bien sûr de ne voir en ce livre que le brouillon d’un chef-d’œuvre.

Created not so long before the Master’s Where the Wild Things Are, this book is a precursor in exploring Maurice Sendak’s very own interests: freedom of chilhood, and the appeal of the fantasy world.
