Les années de lycée de Mary Blair furent marquées par «le souhait de peindre et de dessiner sans en avoir les capacités. Mais grâce à aux encouragements de mes parents, à quelques bourses puis un mari artiste lui-même, je suis parvenue à obtenir une formation artistique. (…) Les travaux pratiques ont réellement commencé quand j'ai travaillé pour l’industrie du cinéma d’animation.»
La M.G.M. dès 1937, Disney pendant une quinzaine d’années, puis la publicité, l’édition, j’en passe et des meilleurs.

Mary Blair wrote that her college years were “dominated by the desire to draw and paint and the lack of means to follow through. However, with encouraging parents, and a few scholarships, and subsequently an understanding artist-husband, I was able to complete an art education. (…) More real background training came with my association with the animated cartoon industry.”
M.G.M. from 1937, then the Disney Studios, for fifteen years, then the advertising field, children books, to name a few.

C’est en étudiant l’histoire de l’art à l’université Joseph Low découvrit les gravures du moyen-âge.
Comme le rapporte Henry C. Pitz, il “followed the trail through book stores, librairies, print rooms, through Chinese calligraphy, 18th century chap-books, early Renaissance engraving, German wood-blocks, and the folk art of all countries.”
Puis il franchit le pas, s’achète une presse et des caractères, apprend gravure et typographie en se confrontant à la machine.
Pour parfaire cet apprentissage en autodidacte il passe 6 mois à l’Art Student League de New York où il reçoit l’enseignement de Vaclav Vytlacil (qui formera aussi Robert Rauschenberg) et de George Grosz.
Ce livre fait partie de ses toutes premières publications pour les enfants et Walter Lorraine résume parfaitement son style à cette époque: “Joseph Low’s early work had a direct graphic quality and a superior sense of design composition. He knew the process of printing well and experimenting with planes of space and the overprinting of color. His work was uniquely his own vision.”
Certainement un des plus beaux livres de ma bibliothèque.
